After months and months of speculation, Manchester United held firm and ensured Paul Pogba, their star player, would remain at Old Trafford for the 2019-20 season.

The midfielder was one of the players Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to build his new look team around, and Ed Woodward made it clear that Real Madrid, the most interested party, would have to pay at least €200m to change everyone’s mind.

That never happened, and the France international has since started every game so far this season, assisting teammates twice in four appearances.

In the meantime, Pogba’s brother, Mathias, moved to CD Manchego Ciudad Real in Spain’s lower tiers, which has been great for the local press, who try and chat to him at every opportunity to find out more about what the Manchester United player is thinking back in England.

On Wednesday, the 29-year-old sat down with El Chiringuito, where he gave the latest update.

He said: “Paul knows he cannot leave Manchester United, so he’s going to focus on this season. It’s not easy right now, because he has a lot of responsibility in the team. A lot of big players have left.

“The only great player is De Gea, the goalkeeper, which means he’s going to have to put a lot of effort in every game.”

Mathias Pogba was then asked if Real Madrid could have done more, and his answer was they probably could have, but the final word was always going to be Woodward’s, without whom’s agreement a deal could never be done.

When told Manchester United were asking for at least €200m, the Manchego forward just laughed and explained that was football these days, with prices going through the roof.

He seemed to understand the Premier League club’s stance, and simply stated that ‘if you really want Paul, either you put the money or it doesn’t get done’.

Few United fans will disagree with that statement.
