On deadline day of the summer 2021 transfer window, Rangers allowed Cedric Itten join Greuther Fürth on a season-long loan deal.
However, the 25-year-old’s stay in Germany was cut short in the mid-season window when Rangers recalled him in January.
Since returning to Ibrox, the striker has played less than 150 minutes. After being on the sidelines for more than two months, Itten returned to action last weekend, when he came off the bench for Rangers in their 3-1 win over Motherwell.
The Switzerland international played a role in helping his country qualify for the World Cup by scoring against Bulgaria last November. The player, however, has been reduced to a secondary role at Rangers in 2022.
According to Blick, a ‘mysterious infection’ has forced Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s man to spend time away from the pitch in this calendar year. The Scottish club’s doctors and his girlfriend’s father, who is also a doctor, ‘could have given an explanation’ for the ‘difficult time’ he endured in the last few months.
“The whole thing really blew my mind. I wanted to eat, but I couldn’t, I only ate soup and lost a total of four kilos,” the Rangers player said.
“I previously tested positive, even though I’ve been vaccinated three times. Was then in quarantine for ten days, felt good again, was back in physical training before it knocked me out again.”
Meanwhile, Itten admitted Van Bronckhorst was the reason behind Rangers’ decision to cut short his loan stay at Greuther Fürth.
“He [Van Bronckhorst] called me and told me that he would never have loaned me out if he had been coach at the beginning of the season,” Itten explained.
