Greuther Fürth club chief Rachid Azzouzi has admitted they expected Glasgow Rangers to take Cedric Itten back to Ibrox this month.
Itten joined the German club on loan in the summer transfer window, with former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard electing to let him go and get regular game time elsewhere.
That’s not really been the case for him, though, with just 12 appearances in the 2.Bundesliga by this point.
Half of those have been substitute appearances, while he’s found himself sat on the bench as an unused substitute for the 0-0 draws with Stuttgart and Augsburg.
That’s led Gerrard’s replacement, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, to call him back this month, with Kicker reporting earlier today that Rangers had activated a clause in the original loan deal.
BILD back that up, stating that the ‘Bundesliga adventure is over’ for Itten, and have comments from Azzouzi on the matter.
“This clause made it possible for us to win Itten for us in the first place,” he said.
“So we knew that something like this could happen. He wants to play as much as possible. But that is no longer the case because of the change in our style of play.”
The newspaper explains this in a little more detail, stating that as a ‘penalty box player’, Itten needs a lot of crosses to thrive.
But that ‘doesn’t really fit in’ with what Greuther Furth are doing at the minute, with their current style of play a ‘primarily defensive’ one. Their poor position in the table has already contributed to his decision.
Thus, he’s returned to Rangers this month, where he’ll be hoping he can be given a chance to impress once again.
