Following last season’s disappointing fifth place finish in the Premier League, Liverpool decided it was time for some changes at Anfield.
Jürgen Klopp kept his job, of course, but the squad is currently in the process of being overhauled, with a lot of players being allowed to leave and replacements coming in, such as Alexis Mac Allister.
However, the attack might need a bit of help too, and that’s why Federico Chiesa is being linked with a move to Anfield, brought forward again by Gazzetta dello Sport on Thursday.
The newspaper have a lengthy article about the future of the Italy international at Turin, and make it clear things aren’t going well, as he doesn’t have the best relationship with Max Allegri and doesn’t have a spot in his 3-5-2 other than playing as a second striker or a wing-back.
Neither of those are his preference, and with a contract renewal currently stuck ‘in a stalemate’, the opportunity to leave is growing.
The Reds have brought forward ‘expressions of interest’, and while they won’t be playing in the Champions League next season, they do have ‘the charm of the history club on their side’.
They also have ‘the presence of Jürgen Klopp on the bench’, described as a manager who ‘greatly respects’ Chiesa and would ‘offer him the chance of playing as a advanced winger’, which is what he wants.
The problem, at least for now, is Juventus’ asking price, who want €60m for their player, while Liverpool only value him at €40m, meaning they are unwilling to go over that.
They have a lot of work to do in their squad, and it isn’t surprising to see them being reluctant to overspend on players, having already decided against the pursuit of Jude Bellingham due to his price.
Therefore, work would need to be done behind the scenes to reach an agreement, but there is plenty of time left for that.
