Borussia Dortmund favourite Kevin Großkreutz has admitted he’ll be confronting Jurgen Klopp about his new role at Red Bull after the former Liverpool manager announced it this week.
Sky Sports Germany cover comments from the former defender today and how annoyed he is at Klopp’s appointment for the drinks company.
Klopp left Liverpool earlier this year citing tiredness, electing to bring an end to his nine-year reign at Anfield despite there still being a year left on his deal.
The German boss had insisted he would not returning to work anytime soon, at least as a coach, but that has not proven to be the case.
Instead, he was this week announced as Red Bull’s new Global Sports Director, with the German set to oversee operations at New York, RB Bragantino, RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig.
The news has gone down like a lead balloon, particularly back in Germany, where Klopp had often been held up as an anti-establishment like figure.
That had been helped by his roles managing teams like Mainz, Dortmund and Liverpool and so his decision to work for a global conglomerate, and one very much not liked in Germany, has not been well received.
Großkreutz made 236 appearances for Klopp during their time together at Dortmund and he’s one of those who is unimpressed, revealing a plan to confront him when he sees him next.
“Somehow it still hasn’t really sunk in. I was hoping it was fake news. It was a shock, and sad too,” Sky report him saying on the Viertelstunde Fußball podcast.
“But as a fan, I don’t have to see him in front of the Süd anymore. When we meet, I’ll tell him personally that I think it’s crap that he does something like that.”
