Last week, reports from the Italian media claimed that Kiko Casilla, who was with Leeds United from 2019 to 2022, could return to playing after some thought he had retired.

Despite being without a club since last summer, it was said he was about to join Serie B side Lecco, with few details left for his arrival to be confirmed.

Now as a club director is quoted by Provincia Unica talking about the signing, he actually brings a very interesting and funny story about Casilla’s apparent escape act.

The outlet points out that the former Leeds United goalkeeper had even gone through his medicals to join the club. However, according to Domenico Fracchiolla, he suddenly disappeared before signing a contract.

“He did everything. He asked to train with the team and as he took the field he asked questions about the balls,” said Fracchiolla.

“We were surprised, they were the official Serie B footballs. After training, he arranged to meet us the next day to sign. Instead, at midnight he left without warning, I was really surprised by the boy’s behaviour. We don’t know why he chose that, the only thing I noticed was that he looked at the locker rooms and the stadium in a strange way, it seemed he was expecting something more. But honestly there is one from the Bernabeu. If you want to play in Lecco you have to be satisfied with what’s there.”

Casilla left Leeds United in 2022 when agreeing a move to Getafe, but despite staying at the Spanish side for a year, he was only used twice, having last played on the 3rd of January 2023.

When speaking about his potential move to Lecco this month, the Spanish media even claimed he seemed retired, as he wasn’t involved in transfer rumours recently.

With him clearly not satisfied with the Serie B side, we’ll see whether there’ll be any clubs who could match his expectations in the future.
