Jurgen Klopp’s seven-year spell at Liverpool ‘goes against all the laws of football’, with the German now intrinsically linked to Pep Guardiola.
That’s according to BILD journalist Marcel Reif, who believes the two managers will continue extending at Liverpool and Manchester City respectively so they can continue competing with each other.
Klopp made the decision to extend his stay at Anfield earlier this year, having been due to expire in 2024.
He’s now tied down to Liverpool until 2026 and should he stay until that point, he will have been in charge of the Reds for 11 years.
That would be an impressive feat in the modern game and could see him outlast Guardiola, whose current contract expires next summer.
He’s insisted he will sign a new deal later this year to extend his stay beyond that point, but the length of that agreement remains to be seen, and Reif believes it could be tied to Klopp.
“That (Klopp’s seven years) goes against all the laws of football,” he told Solothurner Zeitung.
The key to Liverpool’s success under Klopp has been a transformation of the squad, with the German first working to overhaul the squad he inherited from Brendan Rodgers.
With that out of the way he has since spent the last few summers tweaking or adding to his squad in an attempt to keep things fresh.
This summer saw possibly the biggest change as Sadio Mane was allowed to depart and Darwin Nunez was brought in.
His arrival, as well as the likes of Luis Diaz, who arrived in January, and Fabio Carvalho, means there is a different look to Liverpool’s starting 11 again this season and Reif believes that is key to Klopp remaining in charge.
“Of course, Klopp wears himself out, that’s why he changes players,” he added.
“Sadio Mane, for example, he would never have let go if he had only been at Liverpool for three years. Klopp has understood that he has to change the team.
“Otherwise, there are too many players who say ‘I can’t listen to what the coach says anymore’.”
