Leeds United have been credited with an interest in Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Julian Weigl.
On February 12th, we covered a shock claim from SportBild that the defensive midfielder is close to Daniel Farke and therefore, could go to Leeds United in the summer window.
Farke spent three years at the German club before joining Leeds in 2023. In his final year at Gladbach, he signed the 29-year-old, who made 24 appearances under his orders.
Rheinische Post had a chat with Weigl, where they specifically asked about the reports linking him to Leeds.
Responding to that, he said: “When I extended my contract here, it was a commitment for the near future. I still have three years left on my contract, and I can see what’s developing here, that something is growing. I find that exciting.”
The German international initially joined Gladbach on loan from Benfica in 2022 and his stay was made permanent the following year. His contract runs down in 2028 and he isn’t thinking about changing clubs anytime soon.
Weigl spent five years at Borussia Dortmund between 2015 and 2020, where he played alongside Marco Reus. The latter has been with LA Galaxy since last summer.
Rheinische Post asked the Gladbach player whether he would like to follow Reus and make a switch to the US in the future.
“Marco would definitely love it if I go there. But that’s not an issue at the moment. I’m happy at Borussia,” Weigl explained.
“Last year wasn’t easy for me personally either, and I’ve learned a lot on a personal level. It was stressful being captain and one of the faces of this difficult season. I’ve let it get to me. That’s why I’m happy that I’ve moved on now, personally and as a player.”
