Flamengo’s deal to send Charly Alcaraz to Everton in January was not a good one and completely favoured the Toffees.
That’s according to Mauro Cezar Pereira, via Gazete do Urubu, who has criticised the deal Flamengo agreed with Everton.
Alcaraz joined the Toffees on loan at the end of the January transfer window in an agreement that includes a purchase agreement.
They will be obligated to buy the midfielder if he starts at least six games between now and the end of the season.
That is looking likely to happen as Alcaraz has made a very positive start to life at Goodison Park, bagging a goal and an assist against Crystal Palace in his first start over the weekend.
Flamengo allowing him to move in the first place came as something of a surprise given they had only signed the Argentine from Southampton in a club record deal in the summer transfer window.
He had struggled to fit in at that point and they appear to have decided to cut their losses and accept Everton’s offer when they came calling.
Pereira can’t understand that, though, and believes the Brazilian side accepted an offer that was more favourable to Everton than themselves.
“The most expensive player in the club’s history was sold without any profit to Flamengo, zero profit, to a club desperate for the player, Everton, with a collection of injured players, in need of an athlete for this role,” he said.
“Everton had to avoid an immediate purchase due to the financial fair play that took eight points from them in the previous English season and this one that is currently under dispute.
“In other words, Flamengo accepted favourable conditions for Everton, correct? They could have said: okay, I accept the conditions, but I don’t want 20 million. I want 25, I want 30, I want 20% of a future sale.
“Flamengo is just trying to get their money back from this player who just turned 22, and if he does well at Everton, he’ll go to another club in England for double the amount. And Flamengo won’t get anything.
“I thought the deal was bad, they could have gotten more out of the English team, especially considering the need. They needed the guy, he hit the post in the last game after only five minutes on the field. So, I think Flamengo didn’t negotiate well in this case.”
