Ruud van Nistelrooy made a mistake taking the Leicester City job and should have held out for something else.
That’s according to journalist Johan Derksen, who has admitted to Vandaag Inside, relayed by Soccer News, that he is feeling sorry for his compatriot.
Van Nistelrooy took charge at Leicester at the beginning of December and initially started off positively with a win over West Ham and a 2-2 draw again Brighton.
It has been rough for him and his side since then, though, with a run of seven straight defeats following that draw and only a 6-2 win over QPR in the FA Cup breaking that streak.
They eventually beat Tottenham 2-1 on the 26th of January but have lost their last three games since, losing 4-0 to Everton, 2-1 to Manchester United and 2-0 to Arsenal.
Van Nistelrooy has currently lost ten of his 14 games in charge in all competitions with three wins, one draw, sixteen goals scored and 32 conceded.
That has left the Foxes sat in 19th in the table and two points from safety, with the appointment looking like something of a disaster. Derksen certainly thinks so, but more for the manager than Leicester.
“I do feel sorry for Van Nistelrooy,” he said.
“He chose the wrong club. He can’t do anything about that, but that club simply lacks quality.
“He was doing really well. Manchester United had already appointed that Portuguese (Rúben Amorim), so there was no way back for him. But he left United like a king. Then you have to sit in the waiting room for a while. Then someone will come. Now you’ll be a damaged trainer who’s been demoted again.”
“That club has all kinds of problems, and then you step in. You shouldn’t do that, should you?” added René van der Gijp, who is less sympathetic to the former striker.
