Manchester United may have reacted quickly to Benfica’s interest in the goalkeeper Joel Pereira. As reported by the Portuguese media for a few months now, the Lisbon side are keen on signing the youngster.
But, according to O Jogo, Manchester United have no intention of letting Pereira go and have offered him a contract extension.
It’s interesting that O Jogo claims the player only has a contract with United until next year, because after signing an extension in 2015, other websites such as Transfermarkt claim his deal runs until 2020.
Sources have also told Sport Witness the deal expires in 2018, so it’s no surprise to see the club in a hurry to renew it.
Pereira only has one official appearance for the Red Devils, but José Mourinho’s appreciation for him has already been shown when the keeper was called back from a loan at Belenenses earlier this season.
Mourinho has also recently referred to him as ‘the best Portuguese goalkeeper of the next generation’, in a quote that wouldn’t make any sense if letting him leave in the summer.
