Thursday’s night hero for AS Roma, Mile Svilar is slowly showing why the Serie A side decided to bet on him in 2022, but José Mourinho had other plans last summer that involved Tottenham.

The manager, who has since left the Serie A side, had turned to his former club to try and bolster the goalkeeper position, as TuttoMercatoWeb reveal he wasn’t sure the young Serbia international had what it takes.

That’s why ‘it’s no coincidence’ that AS Roma made a move for several goalkeepers last summer, including Hugo Lloris, who was still at Tottenham at the time.

The Spurs icon had made it clear at the end of the 2022-23 campaign that he felt his time at the club was over, which is why Guglielmo Vicario was bought and supplanted him under Ange Postecoglou.

Lazio also moved for the then Tottenham player, but neither managed to get a deal over the line, leading him to join Los Angeles FC in January.

The reason why AS Roma never managed to sign the veteran is because the club owners ‘vetoed the move’ because they didn’t want to change the keeper situation, with Rui Patricio as the starter and Svilar as the backup.

Ironically, that’s exactly what Daniele De Rossi did when he took over, giving the 24-year-old a chance to impress, which he has mostly done to date.
