It seems that manager José Gomes won’t be spending a long time without a job, having been fired by Reading last month. That’s because according to the Portuguese media today, he’s set to take charge of Marítimo very soon.

A report from Record claims the 49-year-old has reached an agreement with the Liga NOS side, and should be landing in Madeira to sign a contract on Thursday.

Gomes had been sacked from Reading on October 9th, so he got just over a month at home before agreeing a deal with a new club.

He’s left the Royals with a record of 10 wins, 12 draws and 16 defeats in 38 matches in charge of the club.

Portuguese managers who start an international career don’t normally like returning to their home country, as it may be seen a step back for them. However, it seems Gomes didn’t fancy a period of vacation.

In the Portuguese league, he’ll be meeting the former Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City manager Carlos Carvalhal, who’s currently in charge of Rio Ave.
