PSV Eindhoven midfielder Mario Gotze has been told to be realistic after admitting he wishes he had joined Liverpool.

Gotze joined the Dutch side in 2020 but has had little impact since his arrival, failing to give his career the kickstart he was hoping for.

The midfielder has struggled to live up to the hype that followed him earlier in his career, particularly after his World Cup-winning goal for Germany in 2014.

It’s been a steady decline since then, with a high profile move to Bayern Munich not working out and a return to Borussia Dortmund failing to reignite things.

Before that return to Dortmund, Gotze had the chance to rejoin former manager Jurgen Klopp, who he made 116 appearances for during their time together at Dortmund.

He ultimately returned to his former club but admitted this week he regrets turning down Liverpool at that point in his career.

Those comments have not gone down well in the Netherlands, particularly with analyst René van der Gijp.

“I really thought that he had a very good image of himself,” MSN report him saying.

“That he thinks: I will play in the Netherlands; I am only seventy per cent fit. And then I’ll be fine, against the NECs of this world.

“But recently, I heard that he would rather have chosen Liverpool. Then I think: Yes, goddamn, you would never have played there, man.

“With Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané. Then I think: Jesus, how can you say that?”
