The Turkish media today reveals Fenerbahce’s interest in Liverpool defender Joel Matip.
The information comes from Sabah, who claims that the player was ‘recommended’ to the Istanbul side, who’ll need a replacement for Leonardo Bonucci this summer.
Matip’s contract with Liverpool expires at the end of the season, and it’s said the Reds will not offer him a new deal. So agents now offered him to Fenerbahce as a free agent.
The potential signing now depends on the response of club manager İsmail Kartal, and in case he approves the signing, they’ll ask for some ‘health reports’ from the player.
Matip hasn’t played since December due to a cruciate ligament tear, so the Turkish side want to be sure about his fitness condition before negotiating his arrival.
The initial expectation is for him to be fit in June, so if that can be confirmed via a medical, he’d be able to make pre-season with Fenerbahce.
In case the exit is confirmed and Matip leaves Liverpool, he’s then set to go after 201 appearances, having won the Champions League and Premier League.
