Following the Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester United, Newcastle United had a bone to pick with Erik ten Hag’s men, and they rectified the situation on Sunday.
The Magpies overran the Red Devils at St James’ Park, and walked away with three very valuable points, allowing to leapfrog their opponents in the Premier league table on goal difference after a stout defensive performance, with Sven Botman highlighted by Voetbal Primeur.
Newcastle were dominant from start to finish, and the scoreline could have been far worse than it was had it not been for a very good David De Gea in the first half.
Joe Willock eventually broke the deadlock with a close range header before Callum Wilson scored the second from a corner, allowing Eddie Howe’s side to have something nice to celebrate to start the week.
One man who was also very important was Sven Botman, who was a rock at the back, stopping the likes of Antony from getting their team back in the game.
Speaking to the Dutch press after the final whistle, the Newcastle defender was asked about the performance by Frank de Boer.
Relayed by Voetbal Primeur, he said: “This one feels very good, especially when you look back at the cup final. We do it as a team. I’m not that old yet, but I’ve never seen everyone so on the same page. Everyone knows what they want from each other, and it’s clear what we expect from each other. That makes it good and it’s difficult to score goals against us.”
