Newcastle United went into October’s international break without managing to win a league fixture this season.

The Magpies are in the relegation zone after collecting only three points from the first seven matches. The Tyneside club, however, received a huge boost for their future plans after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund [PIF] purchased the Premier League side earlier this month.

Since then, several big-name players have already been linked with a move to St James’ Park as reports from the British press have indicated the new Newcastle owners plan to spend big in the coming windows.

Federico Fernández, who has started in three of the four league defeats this season, has now urged his teammates to step up in order to attract top talents.

Friday’s edition of AS has published an interview with the centre-back and when asked whether Newcastle’s perspective changes in the market, Fernández said: “It is up to us to win games again and maintain a good level to attract the players who can make us better.”

Regarding the mood in Newcastle after the club’s takeover, he explained: “The city was revolutionised by this news and by everything it generated worldwide. These are times of change in which we look to the future with great enthusiasm.

“We saw it in the press and later, on Monday, we had the opportunity to meet the owners after training. They agreed to return soon because now there are many who are with the national teams.

“They told us that they want to have a talk to convey what they have already said publicly: that it will be something gradual that will take time.”
