Sunderland and Queens Park Rangers are at opposite ends of the Championship table.
The Black Cats are top with 31 points from 15 games, level on points with second placed Sheffield United and two points ahead of third placed Leeds United. QPR, on the other hand, have 10 points and are at the bottom of the table, five points behind 21st placed Luton Town.
Towards the end of August, QPR came from behind to beat Luton Town 2-1 and that has been their only league win of this season.
Jonathan Varane has been a regular for Martí Cifuentes’ side since joining them from Sporting Gijón in the summer and has missed three league games due to suspension.
The midfielder has given a detailed interview to So Foot, sharing his views on QPR’s poor form this season.
When the 23-year-old was asked about QPR’s ‘problem at the moment’, the Frenchman cited reasons and suggested Cifuentes’ side could have picked up three points against Sunderland earlier this month.
“It’s true that it’s alarming, but sincerely, I’m very hopeful. We’ve got a good base! We lacked efficiency in both areas, creativity and we have 9 or 10 injured players, particularly in attack,” he said.
“Against Sunderland, who are top of the league, we could’ve won [0-0 in the end]. The first goal against Leeds [0-2] was a scramble.”
Cifuentes arrived at QPR in October 2023 and helped them finish in the 18th spot last season. The player remains confident the manager can help turns things around at the club this season.
“We’re not far off and our luck is going to change. The coach is good! I’m very, very positive, nothing’s decided yet,” Varane explained.
