Another day, another defender linked with AS Roma, who are desperate to add to their backline after injuries and departures.
Dodo has left for Inter, Leandro Castan and Tomas Vestenicky both loaned out, Maicon leaving on a free while Antonio Rudiger suffered a serious injury to his knee before the Euros.
With all this in mind, a new recruit wouldn’t go amiss, and it’s Tottenham’s Federico Fazio who is the latest to be linked by Gazzetta dello Sport to the Serie A side.
We skeptically covered a report from Forza Roma earlier on Friday suggesting the same, yet now that it’s coming from Gazzetta, it’s probably worth paying a bit more attention to.
The Italian club want a ‘low-cost’ operation for their back-up defender, and with the Argentinean defender being slowly forced out of the club by Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs would be happy to just see him go.
Despite being from Argentina, the defender also has an Italian passport, which would certainly be a benefit for Roma considering the restrictions on transfers of foreign players in Italy.
The problem with this transfer is that Roma want a defender capable of playing in more than one position, which Fazio does not.
The likes of Nacho (Real Madrid), Thomas Vermaelen (Barcelona) or Javier Manquillo (Atlético Madrid) seem ahead of Fazio, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see him go there if Roma get very desperate.
The player is also of interest to Espanyol in Spain, but their offer of a free loan with Tottenham paying some of his wages isn’t exactly what the London club will be looking for at this stage.
