When Stoke City signed Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting on a free from Schalke 04, many saw the Potters as having a clear run at the Cameroon international, but that wasn’t the case.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb in Italy, Mark Hughes managed to see off the competition of Fiorentina for the forward’s signature.

The Serie A side were apparently the first on the scene, and the player’s father, who also happens to be his agent, already had a basic plan set out with the Italians for his son’s move to Florence.

However, that’s when Stoke City apparently came in, and snapped him right from under their nose, forcing Stefano Pioli and his staff to look elsewhere to bolster their squad.

The Potters admitted they had been following Choupo-Moting for quite some time, prior to his move to Schalke, but they had to wait until now, seeing off rather impressive competition, to get their man.

Signing a three-year deal at with Stoke, the 28-year-old has played in all three Premier League ties so far this season, but is yet to score a goal.
