if Il Messaggero are to be believed, then West Ham made a last ditch attempt to sign a centre-back over the past few days.

The man in question is Denis Vavro, currently contracted to FC Kobenhaven in Denmark, who has also attracted interest from Watford and Lazio.

We covered the supposed bid made by the Hornets last week, and since then, the Serie A side appear to have won the race, despite a recent ‘attempt of a Premier League squad’, who Il Messaggero explain ‘is said to be West Ham’.

That the Hammers would be interested in a centre-back isn’t exactly breaking news, since their efforts to sign Guillermo Maripan haven’t gone unnoticed, while Manchester United’s alleged desire to break the bank for Issa Diop could have forced them to intensify their search.

Regardless of all this, West Ham’s supposed last minute attempt to get Vavro from the Danish club didn’t work, and the expectation is for the 23-year-old to head to Rome sooner rather than later.
