Club Brugge can beat Aston Villa in the Champions League on Wednesday, because Unai Emery’s side aren’t as good as Borussia Dortmund or AC Milan.

That’s according to Wesley Sonck, via Voetbal Primeur, who has backed the Belgian side to beat Unai Emery’s side if they perform as they already have in this year’s competition.

Aston Villa head to Brugge on Wednesday looking to make it four wins from four in the new Champions League league format.

They current sit top of the table after wins over Young Boys, Bayern Munich and Bologna in their three games to date.

Brugge have had a somewhat more difficult start to their campaign, losing at home to Borussia Dortmund and away to AC Milan, 3-0 and 3-1 respectively, either side of a 1-0 away win over SK Sturm Graz.

They sit 26th in the 36-place league at this moment in time, although their three points does mean they’re only three points behind Barcelona in 10th position.

There is plenty left to play for in the four games to come and Sonck believes that the performances against Dortmund and Milan can lead to a victory against Aston Villa.

“I don’t think Club Brugge has a chance against Aston Villa on Wednesday,” he told Het Belang van Limburg.

“Mind you, Aston Villa is a good team, but what I saw from Club against Milan and Dortmund was certainly not bad either.

“Club Brugge has been playing really well in the Champions League this season and has also created enough chances to claim victory every time. They just forgot to finish them off.”

“I rate Aston Villa a little less highly than Dortmund, so if Club is top like they were against Dortmund and Milan and they seize their moments this time, then I think they are capable of winning that match, yes. They just have to play their match and limit the number of mistakes to a minimum and then it could be bingo.”
