For the past few weeks, there have been repeated claims from Spain about Manchester City’s desire to retain İlkay Gündoğan next season. This was again highlighted by today’s Sport when explaining Barcelona’s chances to secure his services in this window.
The midfielder’s current deal expires on June 30th and the La Liga side are keen to take him for free. Earlier today, Sport reported the 32-year-old is willing to join Barca but hasn’t received an offer from them so far.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is currently in Spain for the Puma Legends Trophy [golf], and when jumped on by the media, he expressed his desire to retain the German.
His comments are relayed by Mundo Deportivo.
The treble winning coach has also revealed that he’s aware of the Catalan club’s interest in signing the Citizens star.
“I know that they [Barcelona] are very interested and City are also very interested. We are both very interested. I hope he stays with us, but if he finally decides to go to Barca, he will make an extraordinary signing,” he told the reporters.
Gündoğan was an integral part of Manchester City’s treble winning squad last season and scored a brace to overcome Manchester United in the FA Cup final. He managed 11 goals and seven assists from 51 games.
Guardiola, Manchester City and Barcelona will now be waiting for the player’s decision on his future.
