On January 11th we covered a report from L’Equipe which claimed Watford had initiated contact over signing Maxwel Cornet from Lyon.

The Hornets were said to be prepared to offer ‘salary conditions’ which would be much better than he’s on at Lyon, and the French club were ready to consider a sale for €20m.

At that stage Cornet was described as thinking about the approach, and hadn’t yet made his mind up either way.

AC Milan were also presented as interested but, unlike Watford, they weren’t prepared to meet the €20m asking price of the French club.

Now L’Equipe say the player has knocked the Premier League club back, despite them offering to hike his salary.

Watford are described as ‘insistent’ by the French newspaper, but Cornet isn’t convinced by the club’s ‘project’, feeling it’s not tempting enough to leave Lyon.

That’s despite L’Equipe saying Watford also offered to guarantee him more minutes than he currently gets in France.

The 22 year old has started two Ligue 1 games so far this season, making a further nine substitute appearances.
