Paris Saint-Germain’s Marco Asensio completed a loan move to Aston Villa on deadline day of the winter market.

Three days before his arrival at Villa Park, Aston Villa director Monchi stated Unai Emery has long been an admirer of the attacker. He even stated the manager wanted to sign him before he joined PSG on a free transfer in 2023, after spending nine years at Real Madrid.

French journalist Daniel Riolo has doubts whether the 29-year-old can succeed at Aston Villa.

He’s been discussing the Spain international’s decision to join the Premier League club for RMC Sport’s After Foot, and Le10 Sport have relayed his comments.

The forward scored seven goals and registered 11 assists from 47 matches for the French club under Luis Enrique’s orders. The journalist claims the former Barcelona manager’s system suited Asensio, but he still struggled.

Riolo blames the Spaniard’s injuries and that’s why he questions whether Asensio ‘will be able to impose himself’ under Emery at the English club.

Asensio suffered a serious knee injury in July 2019 and since then has picked up multiple injuries. He hasn’t had any setbacks this season, but his game time was limited at PSG.

“On the other hand, I don’t know about Asensio. He was an atomic bomb when he was at U21s. He was a cut above the rest, but injuries have worn him down,” he said.

“If he didn’t succeed with Luis Enrique in football that suited him well with someone who was prepared to trust him, I have a harder time.

“Even if he’s going to be with Emery [at Aston Villa]. I wonder if his body allows him to… What is he worth today? I don’t know.”
