On March 4th, we covered claims from Germany that Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovač is a ‘big fan’ of Chelsea’s Carney Chukwuemeka. It was also stated the German club need to secure European football to buy him.

The midfielder was restricted to the EFL Cup and the UEFA Conference League with the Blues. He joined BVB on loan in the winter market and played 144 minutes from seven games so far.

Kicker claim the Bundesliga club can buy the 21-year-old Chelsea by exercising the €30m purchase option.

Borussia Dortmund seem to be pleased with the Chelsea owned player’s performances so far.

At the weekend, Chukwuemeka made his first start for the German club in their 4-1 win over SC Freiburg and even got his name on the scoresheet. There were concerns over his fitness initially and therefore he had to wait until last Saturday to make his first start.

Kicker state Dortmund will consider retaining the Englishman if he continues to shine until the end of this season. In that case, BVB would exercise the €30m buying clause despite the size of the purchase option.

This is a different slant compared to the earlier claim that Dortmund needed Europe to buy him. They are currently eighth in the table, three points behind sixth placed Borussia Mönchengladbach and five behind fourth placed 1. FSV Mainz 05.
