Former Feyenoord manager Mario Been is delighted with Arne Slot’s decision to reject Leeds United’s offer last month.
The Whites sacked Jesse Marsch on February 6th and looked at the Dutchman before appointing Javi Gracia as the American’s successor later that month.
Prior to appointing Gracia, Leeds failed with a few candidates, including the current Feyenoord coach and Rayo Vallecano manager Andoni Iraola.
Last month, Slot confirmed the Premier League side approached him but he turned them down in favour of staying at the Dutch club. The 44-year-old has guided Feyenoord to top of the table, three points ahead of Ajax, who are in second spot.
Been is delighted with his compatriot’s decision to snub Leeds, and believes Slot could be in line to receive a call from a bigger club. The ex-Feyenoord midfielder made this claim to Voetbal International’s Dick Voormekaar Podcast.
“I think one thing will be very decisive: achieving Champions League football. If Feyenoord are able to become champion and therefore participate in the million-dollar ball, then Arne will stay for another year. Then there is so much financially possible that he can really strengthen the team,” Been said, as relayed by Voetbal Primeur.
“If it doesn’t happen, his performances will not go unnoticed. I think he can take it a step further. He can be a little pickier. I attribute him at the same level as Erik ten Hag. So, I think he should have a higher reach than Leeds.”
Slot’s contract at Feyenoord lasts until 2025 and VI reported last month that it includes a release clause, which would allow him to join a bigger club.
