Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is recovering well from injury in his native Uruguay, according to the doctor who is overseeing his rehabilitation.

Torreira suffered a fractured ankle in the early stages of Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Portsmouth in the FA Cup last month, with it looking likely he would miss the rest of the season as a result.

He’s been working his way back to fitness since then, with the hope that he may end up featuring in the closing games of the season after the Premier League’s decision to suspend fixtures.

The enforced isolation period because of COVID-19 has seen the midfielder return to his hometown of Fray Bentos to continue his recovery and the doctor working with him has provided an update on his recovery.

“Lucas is very well, he is strong,” Professor Damián Abreu told Impacto Azul FM, relayed by Tenfield.

“He’s fine in his head. It’s normal, given the injury he has in the fracture of the fibula, that he feels some pain.

“That will be present in training and in daily life. As long as it is a pain he can bear, he can train peacefully.”

That will come as positive news for Arsenal, who will be keen to have everyone fit and firing for when the Premier League does eventually return.

There will be some concern, though, with the suggestion from Abreu that the midfielder will always have pain not exactly comforting.

That is a hint this injury may take longer to recover from than first thought, or, worse still, be one that ends up affecting the player for the rest of his career.
