Victor Lindelöf was hailed as a ‘superhero’ in Sweden last August after the Manchester United centre-back caught a thief on a bicycle who robbed an elderly woman.
He held the thief until police arrived at the scene and also returned the bag to the 90-year-old victim, Kerstin. The incident took place in the Red Devils defender’s hometown Vasteras.
According to Aftonbladet, Västmanland District Court has sentenced the 28-year-old accused to ‘probation and to pay 5000 SEK to the victim’.
The newspaper further states ‘the 28-year-old man has been convicted in the district court for aggravated theft and minor drug offences. He could be arrested after national team player Victor Nilsson Lindelöf ran after him’.
Aftonbladet take court documents to say: ‘Then the person named Victor came running into the courtyard. Victor led him back and he had to hand over the bag.’
‘She called for help and two people named Jessica and Victor came to meet her. Jessica had taken a photo of the cyclist which she showed to Victor. Victor ran after the cyclist. Then came a couple of police cars. A moment later, Victor returned with a person whom the others said was the robber.’
Lindelöf was with his wife Maja Lindelöf when the incident took place and after being made aware of the what happened to the victim, the Sweden international ‘ran after the thief, grabbed him and handed him over to the police’.
Kerstin has now taken the help of Sportbladet (Sport section of Aftonbladet) to invite the United player for lunch for his ‘heroic effort’.
“He was incredible. He ran over footbridges and walls. It seemed that he had fantastic strength and form,” Kerstin was quoted as saying by Aftonbladet.
