Tuesday saw reports that Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal with Atalanta for the transfer of Cristian Romero.

Spurs are set to pay €50m plus a further €5m in easily achievable bonuses, and are now on the verge of securing the defender’s move.

Romero will be the second player the Premier League club have secured from the Bergamo side this summer, following the purchase of Pierluigi Gollini.

After all the big claims, it’s worth noting what Atalanta’s local media are saying about the move. Corriere della Sera’s Bergamo edition says Tottenham’s transfer effort was ‘impossible to refuse’ for the Serie A side, with them almost obliged to agree a sale when the figures went above €50m.

As far as the local report is concerned, Romero was the best defender in Italian football last season, which is quite some endorsement and will be welcomed by Spurs fans.

Only signatures on the contracts are missing, and it’s expected that ‘white smoke’, which likely refers to announcements by the clubs involved, will come in the ‘next few hours’.
