Nicolas Gaitan. We really missed him. One of the favourite Manchester United targets of all time is finally back having his name linked to an English club.
It’s now Tottenham Hotspur who are interested in signing the player, according to The Mirror.
The story in it’s entirety appeared on The Mirror’s transfer blog and came from John Cross: ‘Spurs eye Gaitan loan
Atletico Madrid winger Nico Gaitan could be ready for a January loan move to the Premier League.
Gatian, 28, has struggled to make an impact at Atletico since arriving and would be keen on a move to get playing again. That could alert Tottenham but Atletico have yet to give the Argentinian the green light to go out on loan.’
But Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo have a quick answer for the story by saying the transfer is impossible.
Atletico Madrid have no permission to make signings in the January window due to a sanction from FIFA, therefore they can’t sign a replacement. As it stands, Atletico are also banned in the summer window, pending an appeal.
Gaitan has been struggling at Atletico Madrid to have the same success he had at Benfica. After the €25m move last summer, the midfielder has only played 663 minutes, having scored two goals and making one assist.
Mauricio Pochettino is featuring prominently in the Argentine and Spanish reports on the rumour, with it being added, for no stated reason, that it’s Poch pushing the Spurs interest.
Contacted by Sport Witness, Gaitan’s agent José Iribarren has refused to speak on the matter.
