Valencia have identified Watford’s Étienne Capoue as an ‘alternative’ to Manchester City’s Yangel Herrera, according to Super Deporte.

Javi Gracia, the La Liga club’s new manager, met president Anil Murthy on Thursday morning and discussed about the club’s sporting plan for next season.

It’s claimed the Spanish side’s priority this summer is to bring in a new midfielder and a centre-back.

The Citizens player was the ‘great favourite’ and if Valencia sign the Venezuelan, then he has to occupy one of the three non-EU slots in the squad.

However, those positions are already covered and his arrival depends heavily on Gabriel Paulista obtaining a Spanish passport. Super Deporte state there has been ‘no significant progress’, and this has forced them to look at alternatives.

After learning about the ‘impossibility’ of advancing further to sign Herrera, Valencia have turned their attention towards Capoue.

The Frenchman enjoyed his best football with Hornets under Gracia’s guidance, which also saw him represent the national team and make it to the FA Cup final last season.

Watford have dropped to the Championship, so any approach for the 32-year-old, who has two years left on his contract, should be relatively easy.

Before that, they need departures, and Valencia’s finances are in a mess right now.
