Losing their second Champions League game 2-0 against Sporting CP, Tottenham will now need to pick up some points against Eintracht Frankfurt in their next game.
They first will face Leicester in the Premier League, which is what Antonio Conte will be focused on before a chunk of his squad head off on international duty.
Among those will be Hugo Lloris, who will face Austria and Denmark in the Nations League with France, who gave a post match interview after Tottenham’s defeat and touched on the current situation with his national team, where a bit of discord has appeared on and off the pitch of late.
He said, relayed by L’Equipe: “I don’t have all the elements, so I don’t know if everything is true. Either way, a few months from the World Cup, it’s important to remain united and focused on the objective. We’ll need all our strength, all our energy. We need to remain focused on the pitch.
“It’s a bit all over the place at the moment. I think the international break will do us some good, even if there isn’t much to play for and quite a few important players missing, it will be good to see each other again to come together a bit. Especially when we left on a few negative feelings in June.”
That last bit is because France have failed to win any of their last four games, losing to Denmark and Croatia, as well as drawing against the latter and Austria in the first set of fixtures of the Nations League.
They now don’t stand a chance of winning their group, which could lead Didier Deschamps to call up a few first timers when he announces his next squad on Thursday.
We’ll have to wait and see about that part, but one thing is almost certain, and that’s Hugo Lloris’ presence in it, as the Tottenham man is France’s captain and will be needed by his national team manager to try and unite the squad ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.
