If Ralf Rangnick did one thing right at Manchester United during his brief yet disappointing tenure as the club’s interim manager, it’s give Anthony Elanga the minutes he needed to develop.
The Sweden international became one of the few shining lights at Old Trafford during the second half of the campaign, totalling 21 appearances in the Premier League, scoring two goals and assisting two others.
The forward is also a regular for his country these days, being picked by Janne Andersson more and more often, as was the case for the current international break, during which he found the back of the net in a 2-1 loss against Norway.
With two more games to play, one against Serbia and another against Norway, he will be hoping to add to his tally before going on holiday.
After that comes the preseason with Manchester United, where he will finally get to work under Erik ten Hag, who has taken over at Old Trafford full-time.
Asked about the prospect of working with the Dutchman, Elanga couldn’t hide his excitement.
He said, relayed by Aftonbladet: “You just have to see what Erik has done for Ajax. They play good football and he has helped many young players. I’m ready to play for him.”
Elanga also felt that next year ‘will be better’ for Manchester United, despite the farewells to players such as Nemanja Matić and Paul Pogba, with a latter ‘like a big brother’ to the winger.
