Publicly promising he wasn’t planning on replacing Simon Mignolet when he bought Loris Karius to Liverpool, Jürgen Klopp clearly had other ideas in private, considering the German goalkeeper is currently starting for the Premier League leaders.
Not playing in the league since the 2-1 win over Chelsea back in September, the former Sunderland goalkeeper was treated with a rare start against Tottenham in the League Cup a couple of weeks ago, but that’s been about it.
Still called up to the Belgium squad by Roberto Martinez, Mignolet was even handed his 18th cap last week in a 1-1 draw in the friendly against the Netherlands, where he knocked out Tottenham’s Vincent Janssen, but that’s not enough for him.
Speaking to Limburg TV in Belgium, the Liverpool goalkeeper made it clear he wanted more first-team football, but wasn’t thinking of looking elsewhere to find it.
He said: “No, I’m not thinking of leaving. I’m thinking about the future. I’m fully focused on Liverpool. Of course, I’d like to become the number one goalkeeper again. I’m not used to the bench, and I want that to change.”
Considering Liverpool’s current form with Karius in goal (five wins in their last six games), and the fact they are currently league leaders, that doesn’t look like happening anytime soon.
Unless the German goalkeeper has a terrible game in the coming weeks, that is.
Or breaks his hand again….
