On Monday, Aston Villa managing director Monchi spoke to Gol in Spain, a day after his former club, Sevilla, lost their local derby to Real Betis.

AS have relayed comments made by Monchi, where he agreed Real Betis deserved to beat Sevilla 2-1.

During the last international break, the Aston Villa man spent time in Spain. A Real Betis fan used Isco’s transfer to poke at the former Sevilla sporting director.

Monchi had two spells as the La Liga side’s sporting director and in his second spell, he signed Isco on a free transfer in 2022. Sevilla released the 32-year-old in January 2023, and he ended up joining Real Betis for free later that year.

The midfielder impressed and established himself as a starter under Manuel Pellegrini’s orders at Real Betis. Prior to Isco’s exit from Sevilla, rumours from Spain had stated he was involved in a physical altercation with Monchi.

Last week, a Real Betis fan recorded a video of interaction with Monchi, where he thanked him for taking a swing at Isco. The Aston Villa official was quick to dismiss it.

Speaking to Gol, the 56-year-old director admitted he was clearly unhappy with the fan interaction.

“In that video, you have to remember it’s something I wouldn’t wish on anyone,” he said.

“It breaks anyone’s privacy. I was walking through my town and a guy came by… I gave him too much, I didn’t know he was recording me.”

“Maybe I wasn’t lucky, but I’m spontaneous. I said that, but I could have said anything else. I’m not happy about it, nor am I boasting. It’s a situation I wouldn’t advise anyone to live through.

“He tried to be funny at my expense. I don’t think those things are good for everyday life. I felt uncomfortable. I know some people liked the answer and others didn’t, but I think these are things that shouldn’t happen.”
