As Christian Eriksen joined the Dane national team for the first international break of the season, it’s with great joy that the local press reports the form he’s been in.
The midfielder managed to have a great start for Manchester United since signing for the Red Devils as a free agent this summer, having started every single game under Erik ten Hag this season.
Newspaper Politiken today features a story claiming that Eriksen’s arrival at Old Trafford didn’t create such expectations at first, pointing out that he’d first been labelled ‘just a new ageing Juan Mata’, and after his first appearances he ended up being compared to club legend Paul Scholes instead.
“It’s football in a nutshell and shows how fast it is,” Eriksen told Politiken.
“Of course, it is great to be compared to them, but you create your own ways and your own name. I was lucky that I managed to play against Paul Scholes. He was a good player, so I’m happy to be compared to him.”
Eriksen also talked about how big Manchester United are, as he had obviously seen the Red Devils from close when playing for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford.
“Like everyone else, I’ve previously been one of those sitting and reading about what happened in United. It is a huge club, and no one in the world does not know about the brand United.
“You can see how much is being written. Stories about one and the other, both for good and evil. When you are part of it, you find out what is true and what is not true. What to trust and what not to trust.”
Regarding Manchester United’s poor results at the start of the season, Eriksen explained that Erik ten Hag and the players were still finding the best way to play at the time. Now he claims to have found his place on the pitch.
“During that period we were probably searching – also for my own part. I played many different positions in a very short time. First a little striker and then down in defensive midfield. In recent matches, I have played as an 8, and it suits me very well. It’s great that we’ve come back on top with wins, which have been good for us and created a bit of confidence.”
