Manuel Ugarte’s move to Manchester United took quite a while to finalise, and wasn’t announced until deadline day of the summer window.
The midfielder should soon feature for the Red Devils, despite Erik ten Hag suggesting Ugarte will need some time to be ready to play. He played both matches for Uruguay during the international break so is clearly fit.
After Uruguay’s game against Venezuela yesterday, Ugarte spoke to the press in the mixed zone, said that the Red Devils ‘promised’ to sign him, and that he’d have to show why soon.
Ugarte said, as relayed by El Pais: “This last month has been complicated because it was a difficult negotiation and United promised to take me and now I’m going to have to prove it.”
The outlet mentions that the midfielder was down with fever on Monday but still played against Venezuela so that issue looks resolved.
His arrival comes as a huge boost for Manchester United, who witnessed Casemiro’s struggles against Liverpool and clearly need to reassess their midfield.
Fortunately, Ugarte sounds ready, and also appears aware of the expectation which will be attached to him.
