Overshadowed by the arrival of Erling Haaland, Julián Álvarez is quietly showing what he can do at Manchester City when given the chance.
The young forward repaid Pep Guardiola’s faith in him with two goals in his only Premier League start, which came in the 6-0 drubbing of Nottingham Forest at the end of August.
He’s appeared here and there since, and most recently scored for Argentina in their 3-0 friendly win over Jamaica.
Despite his 11 caps for his country and two goals, the Manchester City player remains humble and doesn’t feel like he’s guaranteed a place in Lionel Scaloni’s squad ahead of the World Cup.
Speaking after the game against Jamaica, in a chat with TyC Sports, the 21-year-old made it clear there is still a long way to go before the tournament and a lot can happen.
He said: “I’m very happy, there’s still a while for it to arrive. The manager has to choose the 26 summoned, but I’m going to continue working as I have done so far, as will all my teammates, to be available. You never know, you have to work day to day, because you don’t know what could happen.”
Álvarez also pointed out that he learns ‘something new’ every day under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, and he’s ‘happy for the present’ within the Argentina squad.
Since arriving from River, the Argentine has found the back of the net three times over eight appearances, totalling 249 minutes of football for the Etihad side.
