At Leicester City since 2016, Nampalys Mendy has only made 80 appearances for the club since his arrival from OGC Nice five and a half years ago.
One of those was spent back on loan with the Ligue 1 side, but it’s fair to say the £14m transfer has been something of a failure.
Spending a chunk of the season out with a groin strain, Mendy has made just one appearance under Brendan Rodgers this season, for 31 minutes in an EFL Cup tie against Brighton, but it was still enough to earn him a call up for the Senegal national team, where he is enjoying himself at the Africa Cup of Nations.
He also took some time while out there to comment on his situation at Leicester, relayed by Wiwsport, where he admitted things weren’t exactly going to plan.
He said: “I knew very well about my club situation. It’s very complicated and very difficult, whether it be mentally, it’s complicated when I’m deprived of what I love, but I’m passionate. I’ve always kept this objective in my head (to be at AFCON).
“I was lucky to be selected despite my situation. I worked really really hard during that period when I wasn’t playing, and today it’s paying off. I’m very pleased and I hope it’ll carry on like this”.
Strong words from the Leicester midfielder, who clearly isn’t happy with how things are going at King Power Stadium.
He is contracted there until 2023, having renew his first contract back in August 2020.
