Newcastle United favourite Jonas Gutierrez has revealed he once nearly came to blows with teammate Fabricio Coloccini at the club.
The two Argentines spent several years playing alongside each other at St James Park, both arriving in the summer of 2008 from Mallorca and Deportivo La Coruna respectively.
Gutierrez would go on to make 205 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle in that period while Coloccini managed 275, meaning the pair were regular teammates over the years.
For the most part, it appeared to be a harmonious relationship between the two Argentines but, like in any dressing room, it seems there were bust-ups.
That’s become a big issue in Argentina at this moment in time, with a recent incident seeing Boca Juniors stars Dario Benedetto and Carlos Zambrano coming to blows and needing to be separated by police at halftime of a recent game.
Gutierrez has been commenting on that and revealed he can relate to it, having gone through a similar situation at Newcastle.
“It depends on the relationship that one has,” TyC report him saying.
“It has happened to me, but they didn’t hit me because I didn’t raise my head. Coloccini wanted to tear my head off.
“I raised my hand to him (on the field), he took it badly, and told me ‘when we get to the dressing room I’ll kill you’.
“I was sitting there taking off my boots and Coloccini knows how to fight, I wasn’t going to fight. Besides, I wasn’t angry.
“He was talking in my ear, all my teammates didn’t understand anything. ‘I’m going to rip your head off, who do you think you are’.
“Afterwards, we didn’t take a shower, we changed and left. We always sat together and on that return trip, we didn’t talk. We were friends and it can happen to you.
“He didn’t hit me, but if I reacted, yes (they were going to hit each other).”
