Sandro Tonali has lived something of a soap opera since he moved to the club from AC Milan. The transfer itself was controversial and his life quickly became more complicated.
He went from impressing on his debut to then being suspended for a prolonged period, and his return has added fresh impetus to the club’s midfield.
The ex-Milan man has also made a mark for his country, showing that he hasn’t lost his ability one bit despite the long-term ban.
As international break beckons, Tonali spoke to Sky Italia about his situation and how he is feeling after his return. The Italian was asked about how his relationship has changed with Newcastle fans and he had a lot of positive things to say.
He stated, as relayed by TMW: “Many aspects of my life have changed, but I’m fine on and off the pitch. My relationship with people has also changed, this goes beyond football and has made the difference.”
Asked further about his goals at the Magpies, Tonali revealed that he wants to win silverware at the club after a frustrating 2023/24 campaign for the entire side.
“The goal before returning was to play as much as possible, I knew it wouldn’t be easy. For now I’ve done it in the best way, even with the national team which was another big goal of mine.
“For me, however, it remains the same: to play and do the best possible to try to win here. We are in the quarter-finals of the Cup, that is our goal. Last year things didn’t go well for us, but that remains our big goal.”
He also went on to thank Newcastle fans for how they have supported him during difficult times.
“The Newcastle fans behaved in an unexpected way during the disqualification and I thank them, they don’t make any judgements.
“Even when I watched the matches at the stadium I didn’t hear any judgements, in fact they shook my hand and this struck me because I wasn’t expecting it.”
It certainly seems as if Tonali is forming a close bond with the club and that has only strengthened during difficult times.
That says everything about the passionate Newcastle fanbase and it also defines Tonali’s attitude, as was equally close to the Rossoneri fanbase.
