Roberto De Zerbi’s stock grew exponentially during his time at Brighton & Hove Albion.
He took them to Europe and while the experience didn’t last long, it was certainly eventful for both Brighton and the Italian manager.
While De Zerbi is now at Marseille, he’s previously made it clear that he has a lot of admiration for AC Milan and he will always be warm towards the Rossoneri.
The Italian giants’ former defender and youth system chief Filippo Galli has given some insight about his compatriot, revealing that he was indeed keen on joining Milan after deciding to leave the Seagulls.
Galli spoke at La Fiera del Calcio about the current Marseille boss, as relayed by Calciomercato.it:
“On the day of his resignation from Brighton I was in his office, I was with him together with Andrea Maldera. And he wanted to come to Milan.
“Certainly he would have rushed to the Rossoneri. Then things didn’t go as planned.”
Galli also stated that De Zerbi has had a soft spot for Milan since his youth.
“I was there that day and he showed me photos of him when he was at Milan, when he was in the boys aggregated to the first team.
“You can feel it, when you talk to him, that he has this red and black soul, which some call Milanism”
The ex-Sassuolo boss’ track record suggests that he is not someone who stays around at clubs for too long.
That could provide Milan with an opportunity at some point in the future to sign De Zerbi, who would gladly join.
