FC Twente have announced they’ve reached an agreement with Celtic to sign Gustaf Lagerbielke on a loan deal. They have also confirmed that Brendan Rodgers’ side haven’t agreed to include a buying option.

The centre-back has struggled for regular minutes since joining Celtic from IF Elfsborg a year ago. To put it in context, he clocked in just over 400 minutes from seven league games last season.

Lagerbielke’s situation saw several clubs come forward to take him away from Celtic this summer. This includes SC Heerenveen, KV Mechelen and Lecce, a club that failed to sign him in the winter market.

Heerenveen general manager Ferry de Haan was hopeful of securing a deal for the 24-year-old. They have now lost the battle to their Eredivisie counterparts.

Speaking to the Dutch club’s official website, the Celtic owned player revealed that a chat with manager Joseph Oosting convinced him to join Twente. He remains hopeful of playing regularly there this season.

“When I heard about FC Twente’s interest, I was immediately interested. FC Twente are a club with a rich history and the team has had good successes in the last four years,” he said.

“After my conversation with the trainer, I got a good idea of the plans, and I wanted to go to FC Twente. Next [this] season I hope to play as much as possible and to finish as high as possible in the league with FC Twente. Of course, I am also looking forward to the games in Europe.”

Twente technical director Arnold Bruggink has expressed his delight after signing the Sweden international from Celtic.

“With the arrival of Gustaf Lagerbielke, we have the desired reinforcement for our defence and thus well occupied the central positions. Gustaf is a physically strong defender who is strong both defensively and offensively and has a good pass. He is comfortable on the ball and fits well in the Dutch competition,” Bruggink explained.
