Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia has admitted he is struggling with a lack of playing time at the club after being overtaken by Luke Shaw at left-back.

Malacia arrived at Manchester United in a €15m deal from Feyenoord in the summer and initially replaced Shaw at left-back.

A series of impressive performances earned him a glowing reputation and seemed to have established him as first choice in the position moving forwards.

However, following a 45-minute appearance in the 6-3 defeat to Manchester City at the beginning of October he has found himself out of the starting XI.

He sat on the bench for Manchester United’s next five games in the Premier League and only managed 25 minutes in the 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa at the beginning of November.

He’s since found himself back in Manchester United’s team for the win over Fulham and the 3-0 defeat of Nottingham Forest this week, their first game back after the World Cup.

That would suggest the battle with Luke Shaw for a starting spot is back on, something Malacia will be pleased with after admitting he struggled while out of the team.

“It is of course difficult when you are not allowed minutes,” he told ViaPlay, relayed by Voetbal Primeur.

“You keep hoping every game and you do your best at training. You try to support the team as much as possible, but it’s definitely difficult.

“I want to play every game, so yes, it’s definitely hard when you sit there for so many weeks and you don’t play.

“Sure, I’ve had a moment of I’m through for a while. But you always have to recover. You never know if you have to be there. You always have to be ready.”
