It’s been a year since Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was Argentina’s hero as they won the Copa America, and this continues to be a big topic in the local media.
Amazon has released a series about the national team, and when talking about that specific trophy, it was impossible not to mention the penalties he saved and how he got in the minds of Colombian players.
Now Martinez has explained the “See that I eat you, brother” comment, that he told the opponents before they missed and became so iconic. He claims it started with provocation from the Cafeteros, who claimed the Argentines were out of luck.
“At half-time, the Colombian players had told us that we were cold chests and that we lost finals. I took it very personally,” Martinez told Amazon (via TN).
“That’s why I wanted to eliminate them at any cost”.
TN still recalls all the words said by the Aston Villa player when Everton’s Yerry Mina went to take his penalty.
“I see you nervous, you are laughing but you are nervous. You are nervous. Look, the ball is a little ahead. Yes, yes, play dumb. I already know you. You like the show business. Look, if you cross it, I’ll save it, huh. Look how I eat you, brother. Look how I eat you, brother.”
Martinez made his debut in June 2021 in a World Cup qualifier, and has never left the role since then, having played and conquered the Copa America in those same months.
Now the Aston Villa goalkeeper continues to be the number one in the squad, and is expected to be their goalkeeper at the World Cup in Qatar later this year.
Keep an eye on him if he faces any penalties.
