Bein Sports Turkey journalist Mehmet Demirkol belives Cenk Tosun should leave Everton during the January transfer window in order to get regular first-team football ahead of Euro 2020.

Speaking on Bein Manset, Demirkol said Tosun made a mistake not leaving Everton in the summer, and he claims Bundesliga side Schalke were interested in him: “I know Schalke wanted to sign Cenk, but he decided to stay at Everton and fight for his place. I respect his decision, but I think he made a mistake.

“He should have left the club in the summer. I still think he needs to leave in January to get more regular football under his belt. We need him as a country. I hope he will make the right decision this time.”

Tosun has only made one Premier League appearance for Everton this season which came as a second half substitute against Sheffield United.

In recent months he’s been linked with a return Turkey and reports yesterday claimed he could return to his former club Besiktas if Ahmet Nur Cebi wins the presidential election on Sunday.

There’s lots of speculation around Besiktas this week, with promises being made about possible recruitment. Given how highly Tosun is thought of by the club’s fans, he was always going to be used to gain votes.

With Turkey on the verge of qualifying for Euro 2020, the 28 year will want a reasonable amount of game time during the second half to the season in order to keep his place.
