Queens Park Rangers midfielder Nicolas Madsen has told the Danish media that he made the right decision to sign for the Championship club.

Last week it was officially announced that Madsen had joined the west London club after being signed for an undisclosed fee from Belgian side Westerlo.

Speaking to Tipsbladet, the Dane was asked about moving to QPR this summer and why choose to sign for them. The 24-year-old said joining the English side means he has made a step up and it’s the right club for him at this stage of his career.

“I think it’s a step up. I hoped I could come here this summer. I think it’s a great project, and a lot of investment is being made in new training facilities. It seems like the right place for me,” said the midfielder.

On negotiations being lengthy and other clubs being keen, he made it clear that it was QPR he wanted: “I don’t know how much I have to say about that, but I can at least say that it is the right decision. I didn’t have much doubt when they came on the field. We have been working on it for a long time in the window. I am very happy that it was successful.

“The first thing is that the clubs must agree, and this has taken some time. It has been a long process, and there are many mechanisms in such a negotiation. There have also been several times when I almost thought I was on the plane, and other times I never thought I was going to come. I think this is how it is in most negotiations. I’m glad it worked out in the end.”

Madsen spent two seasons in the Jupiler League after signing for Westerlo from Danish side FC Midtjylland. He made 74 league appearances for the Belgium club, scoring 16 goals.

The central midfielder has signed a contract with QPR until June 2029 and he will join up with fellow Dane, Lucas Andersen. Like Andersen, Madsen has played for the Denmark U21 side, but as yet he’s failed to make the breakthrough to the national senior team.
