A couple of weeks ago, during the international break, Marcos Alonso spoke to the Spanish media about several things, but it felt the whole point of the interview was to raise his profile in the country and give some hints about the national team.

A couple of weeks later and he’s doing similar, the Chelsea player speaking to Marca, and waiting for the inevitable question about the Spanish national team.

Marca dutifully asked Alonso if he sees himself in the national team, and the Chelsea player replied: “Yes, yes. I think I can contribute a lot to the selection. Right now I’m concerned about the matches with Chelsea and it’s not a subject that has to matter much to me, because in the end it’s not a decision of mine.

“I can only show my level on the pitch that’s what I try. In my hand is winning the maximum possible matches with Chelsea, do well and wait. Ticket for Russia? First win with Chelsea…”

Alonso is clearly fooling nobody when he says getting picked doesn’t matter much to him, it clearly does and there’s nothing to be embarassed about there.

With the World Cup on the horizon, things are now even more pressing, and it’s a surprise that Alonso hasn’t been given some sort of chance by Spain manager Julen Lopetegui.

If speaking to the Spanish press and highlighting his situation is something Alonso feels will help, then there’s no harm giving it a try.
