Alvaro Morata to Manchester United was one of the sagas of the summer, and, perhaps more often than not, the sagas end in disappointment.
Morata didn’t get his move and Manchester United, frustrated by Real Madrid, quickly switched to Romelu Lukaku and got a deal done, leaving the Spain international wondering what had happened.
With a week or so for the situation to calm down, there was no panic for Morata or Madrid, and the Chelsea possibility was always there. The player wanted the move but wasn’t desperate for it, there wasn’t going to be tantrums.
Madrid were quite happy for the striker to stay, but getting a huge fee for him was also attractive, there wasn’t really a terrible outcome possible for either the player or his club.
Chelsea got their deal done and Morata has left Beverley Hills to travel to Stamford Bridge. Marca got a quote from the player about his new adventure: “I am very happy. I go to a club that always valued me. I’ve already spoken to Conte.
“I’m not disappointed, at all, I’ve won four titles here, but now I only think about putting on the Chelsea shirt… I do not think I’m coming back.”
Now we can all look forward to a season of Alvaro Morata and Romelu Lukaku comparisons, with Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho sending snipes across the airwaves.
